Summer's Wane: August News
I write to you as I am heading home after a week of The Song School in Lyons, Colorado. For those not familiar with The Song School, it is a week long curriculum taught in a beautiful campground setting that offers songwriters some tools to take everything up a notch. We honed writing, performing, singing, guitar playing, touring strategies and most of all - digging into your truth and your raison d’etre. I took classes from Mary Gauthier, Peter Himmelman and Steve Seskin during the day and stayed up song-swapping by campfire with many great new friends into the wee small hours. Many of you are hip to The Song School, but it was my first time and I was rocked at so many levels. This is camp for adults - no lights out and no archery!!! There is an easy going familial bent to the entire experience, but the underbelly is about moving us and our chops from good, to great, to fucking amazing. Many of these classes were about people breaking through their barriers as performers and writers. Transformations among the group were rampant. There were a lot of tears - including my own. They seemed to be a symptom of this personal growth that took place through instructor-student interactions. Deep inside, I got churned - and it was good. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
The news of Robin Williams rattled into The Song School like an unwelcome snake. It hit me hard as the feeling in my gut said that we as a society had let him down. While society places so much importance on monetizing success, we forget the un-famous and unpublicized acts of love. We forget that there are many ways to recognize personal success without measuring it in dollars or social media hits. Of course he did himself in and we will never really know everything that led to this tragedy, but the lesson here is to be vigilant and do what we can to reach out to those we love. We must remind each other that life is not that bad and that problems can eventually be solved. It takes risk to win and courage to lose. It’s a shame that we don’t support people who reach for it and lose.
